HOW TO PREPARE YOUR TRACKS FOR MIXING

1. Export Individual Tracks in Wav or Aiff format
Export the individual tracks in your song in wav or aiff format.
If you are new to this read: how to send tracks for mixing for a general understanding.
If you already get all this stuff, but are unsure how to export the individual tracks in your recording program (please do not send your recording program’s session files) – kindly follow these next steps to prepare your audio tracks for mixing.
2. Turn off FX
Make sure your tracks have NOT HAD ANY FX OR PLUGINS APPLIED TO THEM. Autotune or Melodyne is fine.
One exception is if the FX add to the artistic vision of the song then leave the FX on.
If there’s a problem, I can always ask you later to send the particular track without the specific FX.
3. Make Sure You Are Sending Audio Tracks
Audio tracks have an extension like .wav or .aiff.
An extension is where the end of the file will say what it is, for example, a vocal track file exported in wav, will be called “vocaltrack.wav”.
The way you see this is by right clicking on it (in windows) or secondary clicking on it (in mac) and going to properties, if you don’t see that .wav, see step 1.
4. Make Sure Your Tracks Are Aligned
This is mostly for Rappers:
If you record to an mp3 of the beat and then purchase the beat stems from a producer: Import the beat stems into your recording session and line up the beat stems to the vocals.
Once it’s aligned the way you like, export everything, vocal tracks and the beat stems:
This way your vocals will be on beat!
5. Include Tempo and Song Key
Although this step is optional — if you include the songs key, it’s tempo as well as the rough mix it will go a long way in ensuring full success of the mix.
